Spanish destinations like
Mahon, Mallorca and
Tenerife are among the most popular spots for holidaying families, claimed one expert.
With families increasingly travelling abroad, the "child friendly cluture" of Spain is an added allure to the almost certain sunshine along the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts.
Also behind the rise is a perception among families that UK beaches are to expensive.
A survey for Mothercare and Mother & Baby magazine discovered that 75 per cent of 2,000 parents polled thought that family holidays at UK beaches was too expensive.
By contrast 70 per cent thought it would be cheaper to go abroad.
Luly Ace, an expert in family holidays, said: "In my experience with smaller children, a warm sandy beach will keep them entertained for hours, mix that with the child-friendly cultures of Italy or Spain and you have a winning formula."
Spanish holiday spots are also easy to get to, short flights leave regularly from airports around the UK and car rental is easy to arrange online.
Hotels are also accommodating to families with children.
