The tourists boats depart from the pretty cosmopolitan centre of Agios adjacent to Lake Voulismeni a former freshwater lake but now connected to the sea. Located right in the centre of Agios Nikolaos it is roughly a round shape some 137 metres in diameter but deep with a depth believed to be some 64 metres. Local residents simply refer to it as just 'the lake'. Which is lined with pretty tourist bars and restaurants, the lake connects to Agios's harbour.
Local legend has it that the lake Voulismeni is bottomless! Based apparently on locals noticing disturbances at the surface of the water during an earthquake in 1956 on the famous Greek island of Santorini, many assume that there is a possible geological relation between the two resorts.
The holiday island of Santorini is considered by some Greeks to be the ancient lost city of Atlantis.
