Menorcans salute sea saint
The Dia de Virgen de Carmen is a celebration dedicated to the saint whose tender eye and gentle hand has looked over fishermen and their ships, keeping their nets bulging with fresh Mediterranean fish and making sure they return to their loving families.
Mahon, Furnells and Ciutadella, all within reach of each other by rental car will all host celebrations in her honour.
In Mahon, the historic port and one of the largest and deepest in the world, men of the sea will march in maritime themed processions and music through the streets of the walled city.
The port, which buzzes by day with activity and by night with the relaxing leisure of fresh fish restaurants, will host celebrations into the night as an island which has built a history out of the sea offers up its gratitude to the deity that protects them.
Indeed, it is easy to see where a belief in a benign being originates. Menorca's beautiful gold beaches, clear blue waters and impressive inner landscapes are the paradise in which a rich history has sprouted.
With regular flights from the UK, Menorca is a destination that combines relaxation, nature and tradition.
