Palma makes moves on Madrid

PalmaPalma, Majorca is becoming increasingly popular with Brits jetting off on city breaks, new figures have shown.

The city, regarded as being at the heart of the Balearic Islands, has seen twice as many travellers heading there in January 2007 compared to 2006, according to the figures.

This has put it hot on the heels of Barcelona and Madrid as a popular destination with Brits and could soon see it become even more popular than its more glamorous rivals.

John Bevan, from the online travel agent who compiled the figures, said: "Barcelona and Madrid have been staples of the UK city break market for years but now Palma is hot on their heels as sales have more than doubled compared to this time last year."

Palma's wide selection of hotels, restaurants and entertainment is one reason why it is becoming increasingly popular with British holidaymakers, travel experts claim.

And Mr Bevan has added that wider knowledge of Majorca is helping Palma to increase its popularity as holidaymakers are using it as a base to discover other parts of the Balearics.

However, it was Paris that remained the most popular destination for short breaks in January, with Prague coming second.

Official figures show that Paris attracted 78 million visitors in 2006 as tourists looked to sample the Gallic delights on offer in the French capital.
