Midlands enjoys Malaga sun
In January, East Midlands Airport has reported a year-on-year increase of 28 per cent, as more passengers jetted off to escape the winter weather.
Figures from the airport show that Malaga, Alicante and Tenerife were the three most popular European destinations, with 17,223, 17,108 and 15,032 passengers respectively jumping on flights.
Dublin and Glasgow also proved popular with tourists looking for a change of scenery during the month that is regarded as the most depressing of the year.
Penny Coates, East Midlands Airport managing director said: "This is a really strong start to a new year and we are confident the growth trend will continue during the rest of 2007.
"This year we're adding a number of new destinations and increasing our long-haul portfolio further."
Ms Coates has also confirmed that an £8 million redevelopment of the airport's main terminal will improve the facilities and services for passengers passing through its doors.
