Tenerife takes no time off

TenerifeTenerife has already started warming up for this year's fiestas de Mayo, or May parties.

Easter festivities have not even started yet and Carnival has just passed, but the people of the biggest of the Canary Islands are getting ready for the next party.

Organisers started accepting entries to the competition to be the queen of the party and her maids of honour on Monday. Voting for the queen will take place on the 27th of April.

She will oversee the May parties to commemorate the founding of the city including a livestock fair, displays of native sports, a competition for the cross most beautifully decorated with flowers and the famous traditional dinner and dance El Baile de los Magos.

In 1999 this event won the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest number of alfresco diners.

The day after the dinner a group from Los Realejos, a municipality where there is a party every day of the year, will set off some of the most impressive fireworks in Europe.

There are of course ways to find the tranquillity Tenerife is famed for. The island boasts nine golf clubs and countless beaches.
