Spain's BENIDORM on the Costa Blanca has long been a top favourite holiday destination for British tourists. This will be the third consecutive year that the Alicante region has played a role in this event. In 2009 two of the mountain stages of the race took place in Aitana and Cati and this year again in Cati and the new mountain stage was Alcoy, Each year towns clamber for the opportunity to host the opening stage of the tour, this year the honour went to the city of Seville.
Benidorm however has been chosen by race officials for 2011 because of the fantastic infrastructure of Benidorm that sees an influx of three million holiday makers and tourists each year.
The first stage of the race, is rumoured to begin in one of Benidorm's beach districts, it is always a time trial around the streets of the hosting town. By tradition the tour takes place at the end of August each year, but as of yet no dates have been confirmed say airflights..
Apparently one of Spain's greatest cyclists, Alberto Contador, is said to have confirmed that he will take part in the event.
Its reported that the other European racing events have also chosen their starter towns, The flag ship event of the Tour de France will start in the Vendee on the west coast of France, and the Giro d'Italia will start in Turin and finish in Milan.
