Divers unearth Antalya's history


AntalyaDivers in Antalya's clear waters have found remnants of the region's ancient history.

A team connected to the Akdeniz University dived near the Karain Cave and found pre-historic bones and skeletons.

Believed to be from the Bronze Age, the bones could be part of a mass grave, although Mustafa Akaydin, rector of the university, said establishing exactly how many people had been buried was made difficult because the grave was covered in calcium carbonate.

However, he did say that the discovery at would yield discoveries about the very history of civilisation as Antalya is one of the oldest settlement areas in Turkey.

As well as a history dating back thousands of years, the region has growing infrastructure to help holidaymakers make the most of visits to its picturesque harbours and dives under its gentle waves.

There are regular cheap flights to Antalya from various UK airports. Now used to catering to the needs of tourists, the region also offers car rental services and a wide range of accommodation options.
