Tourists who take cheap Car hire in Spain face a speeding clampdown on the Spanish Costas.Holiday makers who speed in Spanish holiday resorts face a hi tech purge because police are unhappy with the amount of tourists not paying fines.
Its reported that Speed cameras in Spain will now transmit data directly to police cars and that cameras have been installed which take pictures of vehicles and send them by wi fi to patrol cars who will be patrolling the Holiday resorts.
The Police can then locate and hand out fines of up to 500 Euro's on the spot, rather than trying to discover a home address through the Car Hire company to send the penalty can be posted.
These new cameras have been put up alongside existing cameras in four areas where holiday makers account for about half of the number of drivers who speed along Spain's resorts and Coast. The areas include Alicante and Murcia which are both popular cheap holiday destinations with UK holidaymakers.
'Except in rare circumstances, non-residents caught speeding on cameras never receive their fines because we've nowhere to send them,' said a spokesman for the Direccion General de Trafico (DGT), the Spanish equivalent of the UK s DVLA.
'It's a problem across the EU, not just in Spain.
The crackdown will also cover holiday makers and longer term residents in Spain who drive British registered vehicles. It will also catch tailgating motorists and people whose cars have other problems.
The DGT spokesman added: 'Negotiations are taking place at EU level to try to introduce a system whereby people who drink-drive or speed are punished wherever in Europe they commit their offence.
